Sea of Stars
The islands of the Maldives are famous for their beaches that sparkle white under the equatorial sun. But, at night, something magical sometimes happens and the beaches sparkle blue. Bioluminescent plankton creates a sea of stars that wash up onto the beaches creating a breathtaking display you will never forget.
Bioluminescence is light produced by a living organism; the plankton produce this light using a chemical called luciferin. The plankton emits light when moved – when a wave breaks on the shore or when you walk barefoot through the damp shoreline. Scientists have recently discovered that this is a stress response and the light is to confuse the creatures trying to eat the plankton and to draw predators to those creatures instead.
The Maldives is one of the top destinations in the world for seeing this natural phenomenon, and it is our pleasure, at Trans Maldivian Airways, to fly you to the sea of stars!
